Strikeforce and Pride FC veteran Evangelista Santos has signed with Legacy Fighting Championship. Promotion officials announced the signing and indicated that "Cyborg" will likely debut for early next year.
Santos received an unlikely title shot against then-Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in 2011. He stifled the champion with a devastating leg-kick attack, but ultimately tapped out to an armbar late in the second round. Since then, he has only fought once. Young upstart Jordan Mein stopped "Cyborg" late in the third round at Strikeforce "Barnett vs. Kharitonov."
According to a report from MMAJunkie, Santos asked for his release from Strikeforce after his last fight against Mein.
The old-school Chute Boxe Academy vet also holds victories over former professional boxer Yosuke Nishijima, Olympic gold medalist Makoto Takimoto and former Dream champion Marius Zaromskis.
Legacy FC is a Texas-based promotion that began hosting events in 2009. Recently, the promotion signed a deal with AXS TV (formerly HDNet) to broadcast their events. Their next scheduled event, Legacy FC 15, takes place Nov. 16 and features a main event between former ADCC absolute champion Robert Drysdale and Chris Reed.
