(Former WEC title challenger Donald "Cowboy"
Cerrone)
A meeting between veteran lightweights has been added to UFC on FX 3. The match
between Donald Cerrone and Yves Edwards takes place May 15 at the Patriot
Center in Fairfax, Va. New magazine-style show "UFC Tonight" broke
the news on Tuesday.
Cerrone planted himself right in the middle of the lightweight title picture
with a six-fight winning streak. During the run, he bested the likes of Chris
Horodecki, Charles Oliveira and Dennis Siver. However, in his last fight, Nate
Diaz dominated "Cowboy" over the course of three rounds and handed
him his first defeat since 2010. During his WEC career, Cerrone fought for the
lightweight belt three times.
Edwards is in the middle of his third stint in the UFC. Back in 2004, he picked
up victories over Hermes Franca and Josh Thomson and was widely considered the
uncrowned UFC lightweight champion. The veteran has also fought for Elite XC,
Pride FC and Strikeforce. In his most recent outing, he dropped a controversial
decision to TUF winner Tony Ferguson.
The UFC returns to the Patriot Center for the first time since UFC Fight Night
20. A rematch between Brandon Vera and Thiago Silva was expected for the card,
but Vera has since dropped out with an injury.
