UFC president Dana White has officially announced through his Twitter page thatUFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will defend his belt against formerchampion Frankie Edgar later this summer. Henderson defeated Edgar for thetitle last month in an extremely close fight.

Earlier this week news broke that the winner of the upcoming Nate Diaz-JimMiller fight at UFC on Fox 3 would earn the first shot and Henderson’s title. Now those reports appeared to be premature.

Henderson lost his WEC title to Anthony Pettis on the promotion’s very lastcard. Since moving to the UFC, the former NAIA All-American has won fourstraight fights including his title victory over Edgar at UFC 144. Over thecourse of his career, Henderson has defeated the likes of Clay Guida, MarkBocek and Donald Cerrone (twice).

It only seems fair that Edgar would receive an immediate rematch. He first wonthe belt with a controversial decision over legendary fighter B.J. Penn in2010. The pair rematched four months later and this time and scored acommanding victory. In his next title defense, Edgar drew with tough wrestlerGray Maynard. Once again the UFC booked an immediate rematch, which Edgar wonwith a come-from-behind knockout. Now he will receive a chance to regain histitle.

White did not announce a date or a venue for the contest. The promotion willhave a busy summer with aid events already booked between May and August. TheUFC will make stops in Las Vegas, Brazil, and Canada.
