Although there is no confirmation it appears Cathal Pendred is next in line for a shot at the Cage Warriors welterweight title currently held by Gael Grimaud now that Pendred defeated Bruno Cavalho.  Cage Warriors 49 took place at the St. David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales October 27th with an undercard webstreamed on Facebook, a main card at MMA Junkie.

The first round of the main event was rather uneventful with both fighters basically working the clinch.  In the second Pendred picked up the pace with aggressive striking and a takedown about half way through the round but Carvalho took over on the ground, putting Pendred through a series of submission attempts for most of the rest of the round.  Pendred came out aggressive again in the third until a slip gave Carvalho an opening to end the round with strikes on the ground.  The judges saw the close fight 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 for Pendred.

In the co-main event Tim Newman took three tries at a guillotine choke against Greg Loughran, the third time seeing the referee declare Loughran tapped and Newman won.  Loughran denies tapping and seemed surprised with the submission call with just fifteen seconds left in the round, look for a possible rematch to result.

CWFC next return to Kuwait for Fight Night 8 on November 30th before finishing the year with a New Year’s Eve show in Ireland.  Rumors of another “main” show to take place before the end of the year could not be confirmed at this time.
