As the current King of Pancrase he desperately needed a win because this was his third attempts. If he didn't perform then that could have been a strikeout for Kiyotaka Shimizu, but he came through.

Shimizu's strategy was clear from the beginning. Take down. That is all he was thinking. He kept shooting in but in the first round Masaaki Sugawara was able to defend well. Sprawled out on all of Shimizu's take down attempts. However, by end of the round, Shimizu began landing punches off the clinch.

Then in the second round Shimizu finally scored a take down, and from the side mount landed few right punches. Sugawara was able to stand back up relatively quickly. From there, Sugawara put on a pressure with punches and kicks however Shimizu defended well by using his foot works, moved to side to side. At the end of this round Shimizu was able to grab Sugawara's kicking leg, shot in, then landed punches. These little hits must've left a good impression on judges.

In the final round Sugawara came back strong, landed a big right hook, and when Shimizu shot in, landed a solid knee shot to the chin. However Shimizu somehow escaped these attacks, shot in and scored another take down.

Shimizu visibly slowed down at the end but he did not allow Sugawara to score any points, and all three judges scored in favor of King of Pancrase.
